Craigslist and Glassdoor are large, well-known job sites with a long history in the industry. Both can complement your recruiting or job search strategy, although as we’ll see, neither is a one-stop-shop for either employers or job seekers.

This review will focus on comparing Craigslist and Glassdoor, however, if you are looking for other options, we would recommend ZipRecruiter. ZipRecruiter offers free job searching for jobseekers and a free trial for job seekers.

Craigslist

Founded in 1995 in San Francisco by Craig Newmark, Craigslist quickly migrated from an email list to a free, web-based classified service. Currently, Craigslist’s sections include community, housing, services, for sale, discussion forums, gigs, jobs, and resume database. Users select their local metro area from a list on the right-hand side of the homepage.

Craigslist For An Employer

Employers can use Craigslist to post job ads, find local candidates for open jobs, and review their resumes. Craigslist doesn’t provide advanced customer support or analytics like more complex job boards. However, it is relatively cheap and easy to use. It’s also locally focused, which means that you can connect quickly with candidates in your area.

To post job advertisements on Craigslist:

1.Go to your local Craigslist page.

2. Click on “Create a job posting” in the top left-hand corner.

3. If necessary, choose the location that works best. For example, if you’re using Craigslist in New York, you’ll need to choose which borough you want to post in.

4. Click on “Job offered.”

5. Select the job category or categories. The price will appear on this screen. Ads cost between $10 and $75 per category based on the region.

6. Fill out the required fields: posting title, zip code, description, etc.

7. Click “Continue” and pay for your posting.

You can also search Craigslist’s resumes database by clicking on “Resumes” and entering keywords in the search bar. For example, if you were looking for a dog walker, you would type “dog walker” into the search bar.

Craigslist For A Job Seeker

Craigslist offers a similarly simple user experience for job seekers. Users who are looking for work can search Craigslist for open jobs, post their resumes to the site, and connect with hiring managers. Craigslist does not offer salary tools, expert advice, or reviews of employers.

To search for jobs on Craigslist:

  1. Go to the jobs column on the homepage
  2. Click on the job category that’s closest to what you’re seeking.
  3. Drill down by selecting filters from the right-hand side of the page. For example, you can filter by full-time or part-time work, search for internships, or restrict results to only the most recent jobs posted.

You can also post your resume on Craigslist to market yourself to recruiters and employers in your area.

  1. Go to your local homepage.
  2. Click on “Create a posting” in the upper left-hand corner.
  3. Click on “Resume/job wanted.”
  4. Click on “I’m an individual seeking employment.”

5. Fill out the required fields.

Glassdoor

Glassdoor is a job website focused on employee reviews of companies. Founded in 2007 in San Francisco, Glassdoor boasts 55 million unique monthly visitors, 100 million reviews and salaries, and 1.9 million employers.

Glassdoor For An Employer

Employers can primarily use Glassdoor as a way to monitor and polish their company brand. Glassdoor’s core product is employee reviews. By monitoring these reviews, employers can see how current and former employees view their organization. This can help them address retention and recruiting issues and present a better face to prospective hires.

Manage Your Branding

Employee reviews are only part of the story. Glassdoor allows employers to provide their mission statement and background information on their company so that candidates can learn about the organization.

Analyze Reviews

In addition to responding to employee reviews, you can analyze how your brand is perceived by using Glassdoor’s analytics tools. See an overview, trends, ratings by job title, and more.

Note: Glassdoor no longer manages its own job posts. To post a job on Glassdoor, you’ll need to go through its partner site, Indeed. Here’s how to post a job on Glassdoor via Indeed.

Glassdoor offers three packages for employers. The free package offers basic branding capabilities like adding your mission statement, as well as some analytics tools. Premium packages provide more custom content and benchmark reports. To learn more about pricing, contact Glassdoor.

Glassdoor For A Job Seeker

Glassdoor is free for job seekers, who can use the site as a way to learn more about employers during their job search. Eventually, users must register and (anonymously) review an employer to read reviews and insights.

Reviews are Glassdoor’s best-known feature. Current and former employees can review employers on a scale of 1 to 5, list pros and cons, and enter salaries and interview tips.

The Difference Between Craigslist And Glassdoor As An Employer

Craigslist and Glassdoor offer very different benefits for employers. Craigslist allows employers to post jobs, search candidate resumes, and contact prospective hires. It doesn’t provide much in the way of analytics or branding.

On the other hand, branding is the main focus of Glassdoor. Employers who want to post jobs will be directed to Glassdoor’s partner site, Indeed. The main value of Glassdoor for employers is in the ability to see what employees think of their organization. By analyzing and responding to employee reviews, as well as by using Glassdoor’s branding tools, employers can protect and enhance their reputation among candidates.

Pricing varies between the sites as well. Craigslist charges a small fee per post ($10 to $75 depending on location). Glassdoor offers a free package and two premium packages for employers, but exact pricing is hard to come by without contacting the sales team at Glassdoor.

The Difference Between Craigslist And Glassdoor As A Job Seeker

Job seekers can use both Craigslist and Glassdoor to find and apply for jobs for free. (Glassdoor’s job postings are listed through its partner site, Indeed.)

However, the biggest difference between the two sites from a job seeker’s perspective is the focus. Craigslist focuses on local hiring, which makes it a good source of job leads at local businesses. Glassdoor focuses on employee reviews and insights. So, Glassdoor is a good source of inside information about what it’s like to work for a company. You can find employee reviews, ratings, salary insights for various job titles at each organization, job interview tips, and more.

Bottom Line

Craigslist and Glassdoor work best as part of a robust recruiting or job search strategy. Together with job search sites that are more focused on job listings, they can provide employers and job seekers with job leads and insight that can help them achieve their goals.

If neither of these options are right for you, we recommend checking out ZipRecruiter.
